5 Days Trekking Marangu Route

Tour Overview

Marangu Route – 5 Days
Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular trekking paths. It offers a well-defined trail and the unique comfort of overnight stays in mountain huts, making it a favorite among climbers seeking a less rugged experience. Though the 5-day itinerary offers less time for acclimatization, it remains an exciting and rewarding challenge for those aiming to reach the Roof of Africa.

Highlights:

  • Hut Accommodation – Sleep in shared mountain huts along the trail for added comfort and shelter.
  • Scenic Summit Ascent – Stand atop Uhuru Peak at sunrise and take in panoramic views from Africa’s highest point.
  • Diverse Landscapes – Pass through lush rainforests, misty moorlands, and stark alpine deserts as you climb.

Safari Itinerary

Departing from Moshi or Arusha, you’ll head toward the eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, passing through the charming village of Marangu en route to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Upon arrival, you'll wait for your trekking permits to be processed while taking in the busy scene of climbers and crew preparing for their ascent.

From here, your trek begins through a lush rainforest, following a winding trail surrounded by dense vegetation and towering trees. Your guide will share insights about the local flora, fauna, and possible wildlife sightings. Since this section can be muddy and slippery - especially after rain - trekking poles and gaiters are highly recommended for added comfort and safety.

Overnight: Mandara Hut

Meals: Lunch & Dinner included

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, the journey continues as we leave the rainforest behind and ascend along a steadily rising trail into the heathland zone. This scenic stretch offers opportunities to spot distinctive high-altitude plants like giant lobelias and groundsels. As we climb higher, the landscape transitions into open moorland dotted with hardy shrubs.

Around midday, we stop to enjoy lunch while taking in spectacular views of Mount Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s rugged eastern peak. By late afternoon, we arrive at Horombo Huts, perched beneath the majestic backdrop of Kibo Summit. Here, the air is cooler and the environment begins to reflect the alpine conditions ahead.

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and begin our steady ascent into the heathland zone. This scenic section of the trail offers glimpses of unique high-altitude flora, including giant lobelias and groundsels. As we gain elevation, the landscape gradually opens up into moorland, dotted with resilient alpine shrubs.

Around midday, we pause for lunch, enjoying sweeping views of Mount Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s dramatic and jagged eastern peak. By late afternoon, we reach Horombo Huts, situated beneath the imposing presence of Kibo Summit. As the altitude increases, the temperatures drop, and the terrain begins to reflect the harsher alpine environment that lies ahead.

Overnight: Kibo Hut

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Your summit attempt begins around midnight from Kibo Hut, as you set out under the starlit sky toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. The trail is physically demanding, but the primary challenge is the high altitude. Each climbing group is accompanied by an experienced guide who closely monitors your physical condition and mental determination throughout the ascent.

Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable achievement, offering breathtaking views and a profound sense of accomplishment. After spending some time at the summit—and possibly visiting nearby glaciers—you will begin your descent back to Kibo Hut. Here, you’ll take a well-earned rest and enjoy a hot meal.

After a short break of about two hours, the journey continues as you descend further to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for your final night on the mountain.

Important Note: Most trekking accidents occur during the descent. Please watch your footing carefully, and take extra care to avoid injuries—especially to your toenails and joints.

After a restful night and a hot breakfast, you’ll begin your final descent through the lush rainforest toward Marangu Gate—the official exit point of Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail is scenic and peaceful, offering a last glimpse of the mountain’s natural beauty.

Upon arrival at the gate, your full trekking team will gather to celebrate your achievement. You’ll have the opportunity to sign the guestbook and reflect on your incredible journey. As a memento of your success, you'll receive a summit certificate - green for those who reached Gillman’s Point, and gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak.

From the gate, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax, enjoy a hot shower, and celebrate your climb.
