Trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro FAQs

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek, meaning no ropes or climbing gear are needed. However, it is physically demanding due to high altitude, long hiking days, and cold temperatures, especially near the summit. Good fitness and mental preparation are essential.

The best months are during the dry seasons:

  • January to early March (clear skies, some snow at the summit)

  • June to October (cooler and drier, most popular period)

While wildlife sightings are not the main attraction, you might see various birds, monkeys, and smaller mammals in the lower forested zones.

Popular routes include:

  • Marangu Route – Hut accommodations, shorter (5–6 days)

  • Machame Route – Most scenic, good acclimatization (7 days)

  • Lemosho Route – Less crowded, great for wildlife, highly recommended (7–8 days)

  • Rongai Route – Remote, gradual ascent, less rainfall

  • Northern Circuit – Longest route, excellent acclimatization

No technical climbing experience is needed, but prior multi-day hiking or trekking experience is highly recommended to prepare for the physical challenge.

The time it takes to climb Kilimanjaro depends on the chosen route. Most expeditions last between 6 to 8 days. An experienced hiker with prior acclimatization can complete an accelerated 5-day program. If you opt to stay overnight in the crater, climbs can extend to 9 days or longer.
